Man, I'm really bothered by the fact that Asta is using his sword to hit people, not slash them. I know it's because he really values life but I'm still bothered by it.

.... For the record... He is hitting people with the blade, his 2-hander is blunt as per a typical Claymore-type weapon...

If it's blunt, how does it sometimes slice things?
And considering his strength and the weight of the sword, I'm not entirely sold on it even needing to be sharp in order to cleft someone in twain...

To a large extent it is a matter of skill... The blade of a claymore is still in a wedge-shape, and as such is still capable of cutting things; however, the utter lack of sharpness to the blade means that any actual cutting power to material objects would have to come from user skill... Most importantly though, this is a manga/anime, mangaka don't have the greatest track record at properly or consistently using weapons properly, this being doubly so with western weapons (remember that this is a country that produces works where you can slice an enemy in two with a mace... a blunt instrument)

As a side note, a sharp, lighter sword would actually be a WORSE option if you wanted to slice someone in two... Contrary to fiction, a real sword is rapidly damaged by being used to cut through a person which is why the claymore was made... A weapon that didn't need a sharp blade and relied on weight and power to take apart their foes, and was better balanced than a hammer or axe was a valuable tool for war
